Abstract

The potential use of stem cell-based therapies for the repair and regeneration of various tissues and organs offers a paradigm shift in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Adult mesenchymal stem cells appear to be an ideal stem cell population for practical regenerative medicine. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) subsets that possess many regenerative properties are adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). ADSCs are also a multipotent progenitor to variety of cells including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, myocytes, epithelial cells, and neuronal cells. It creates a potential to treat a variety of tissue defects from a single autologous cell source. Adipose tissue is relatively easy to harvest and yield in a high number of ADSC per volume of tissue.
