Abstract

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) produces an essential oil called patchouli oil. Main constituents of patchouli oil that acts as antibacterial are patchouli alcohol and pogostone. Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of patchouli against various species of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its mechanism of action is targeting penicillin-binding proteins (PBP), dihydrofolate synthetase (DHPS), dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), DNA gyrase, and RNA polymerase that are required in biosynthesis of various bacterial structures.
