Pacifier use is considered a method to soothe and calm infants. Pacifier use was also recommended to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The age at introduction and intensity of pacifier use may vary and affect exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and the risk of dental malocclusion. WHO and meta-analyses studies suggest that the use of pacifier carries risks of reducing breastfeeding duration and would interfere with the exclusive breastfeeding process, resulting in non-optimal child nutrition. Analytical studies on randomized controlled trials (RCT) showed no association between pacifier use and EBF, and pacifier use may serve as a marker to identify breastfeeding problems. The causal relationship between pacifier use and interruption in breastfeeding and EBF has not been clearly proven; recommendations for pacifier use in different countries may vary.
