Abstract

Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric population, despite scientific progresses in the last decades. Recent evidences suggest that vitamin D may enhance the innate immune response by induction of antimicrobial peptides. Children with sepsis have decreased 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and vitamin D deficiency patients have increased sepsis risk. Vitamin D-deficient sepsis patients have higher risk of mortality compared to sepsis patients with normal vitamin D levels. Vitamin D supplementation may decrease the severity of illness and also reduce mortality.
