Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) bacteria is a food-borne pathogen with a low prevalence rate but with a high fatality rate as a food contaminant. Listeriosis is an infectious disease that causes abortion, meningitis and septicemis; tends to be more fatal in population of pregnant women, infants, the elderlies, and immunodeficiency sufferers. Although cases are rare, the clinical conditions are categorized as severe with a high mortality rate. Laboratory diagnosis can be done with conventional analytic and rapid methods. Infections can be controlled with prevention and treatment.
