Adanya risiko kesehatan merokok menyebabkan perusahaan mengembangkan dan mengiklankan produk nikotin alternatif, seperti e-cigarettes dan “heat-not-burn” (HnB) tanpa membakar tembakau. United States’ Federal Drug Administration (US FDA) menyetujui peredaran produk komersil I Quit Ordinary Smoking (IQOS) di Amerika Serikat. Produk tembakau HnB memanaskan tembakau (hingga 350°C) untuk menghasilkan aerosol nikotin yang dihirup tanpa membakarnya pada suhu yang jauh lebih tinggi (800°C). Laporan menunjukkan 37% pengguna HnB mengalami setidaknya satu gejala, yang paling umum adalah sakit tenggorokan (25,1%) diikuti oleh rasa tidak nyaman pada mata (22,3%). Keyakinan produk tembakau HnB sebagai alternatif untuk mereduksi dampak rokok konvensional tidak sepenuhnya benar. Tembakau HnB tetap dapat memberikan dampak buruk terhadap kesehatan.
